Former First Lady Michelle Obama has revealed that she is currently in therapy as she transitions into a new phase of life. In a recent conversation with podcaster Jay Shetty, Michelle candidly admitted, “At this phase of my life, I’m in therapy right now because I’m transitioning, you know?” Her disclosure comes amid swirling rumours about marital strife with former President Barack Obama, rumours she was quick to dispel.

Now 60 years old, Michelle Obamadaughters, Malia and Sasha, have embarked on their own journeys. “I finished a really hard thing in life with my family intact,” she said, reflecting on raising two children in the political spotlight. “I’m an empty nester. You know my girls are in, they’ve been launched. And now for the first time, as I’ve said before, every choice I’m making is completely mine.”

Every Choice Is Hers Alone

Without the immediate responsibilities of parenting or the obligations of public service, Obama finds herself at a crossroads. “I now don’t have the excuse of, ‘Well my kids need this,’ or ‘my husband needs that,’ or ‘the country needs that,’” she explained. “So how do I think about this next phase, and let me get some help,” she added.

Addressing Divorce Rumours

Last month, Michelle Obama found herself refuting divorce rumours after she attended former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and Donald Trump’s second inauguration without her husband. In her conversation with Shetty, she described the fallout: “That’s the thing that we as women, I think, we struggle with—disappointing people. So much so that this year people couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for mysel,f that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.” She underscored how societal expectations often force a narrative of personal decisions as scandals.

Challenging Stereotypes About Women’s Choices

“This couldn’t be a grown woman just making a set of decisions for herself, right?” she said. “But that’s what society does to us. We start, actually, finally going, ‘What am I doing? Who am I doing this for?’ And if it doesn’t fit into the sort of stereotype of what people think we should do, then it gets labelled as something negative and horrible.”

By sharing her journey into therapy and self-discovery, Michelle Obama continues to use her platform to normalise mental health care, champion personal agency, and challenge outdated gender norms, proving that growth and change are lifelong endeavours.
