In a strange case that seems straight out of a crime thriller, prison officials in Costa Rica caught a black-and-white cat posing as an unlikely drug mule. The cat was discovered with tightly wrapped packages of more than 230 grams of marijuana and almost 68 grams of crack cocaine attached to its body via tape. The Costa Rican Ministry of Justice affirmed the incident in a Facebook post, attributing credit to vigilant prison guards who outsmarted the unorthodox smuggling attempt.
As per officials, the keen guards spotted the cat suspiciously approaching the outer walls of Pococi Prison. On closer observation, they discovered two tightly bound plastic bundles attached to both sides of the cat. Security camera footage published by the ministry depicts officers climbing fences to apprehend the narcotics-carrying cat from the streets. The cat was then softly subdued as officers clipped the cannabis off using scissors without injuring the cat.

The Ministry of Justice reported that the cat was handed over to the National Animal Health Service (SENASA) right away for a medical checkup and treatment. Authorities highlighted that there was no harm to the animal when the operation took place. "Thanks to the prompt reaction of our officers, the drugs were intercepted before reaching the inmate population," the ministry wrote in its post. Authorities are currently probing how the cat ended up being used in such a smuggling attempt and whether inmates or outsiders were used to train or handle the animal. This incident highlights the growing problem of drug trafficking methods within correctional facilities and underscores the need for enhanced surveillance even in seemingly unlikely scenarios.
