Russian President Vladimir Putin has hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, describing India’s economic progress and independent policy approach as exemplary among major world economies.

Putin made the remarks during a meeting with senior members of the Russian Government, where he shared details of his recent telephone conversation with PM Modi. According to the Kremlin’s official statement, the Russian leader underlined that Moscow and New Delhi share a relationship “based on a national consensus” and strengthened over decades of mutual trust.

Putin Hails Modi’s Role In Strengthening Ties

The Russian President emphasised that under Modi’s leadership, India has consistently pursued a sovereign and balanced foreign policy.“India, under Prime Minister Modi, is following a completely independent, sovereign policy and, most importantly, is achieving very good results in the economic sphere. Today, India is demonstrating the highest economic growth rates among the world’s major economies,” Putin said.

Putin further noted that PM Modi has personally contributed to reinforcing the “special privileged strategic partnership” between India and Russia. He also conveyed confidence that the constructive dialogue between both nations would continue on issues of global and regional importance.

The Russian President’s comments came days after he sent a congratulatory telegram to PM Modi on the occasion of his 75th birthday. In the message, Putin commended Modi’s role in strengthening bilateral relations and broadening cooperation in key sectors. “You are making a great personal contribution to deepening Russian-Indian cooperation in multiple areas,” Putin wrote in his message.

India-Russia Ties In Focus

India and Russia have maintained a close partnership for decades, formalised through the signing of the “Declaration on the India-Russia Strategic Partnership” in October 2000 during Putin’s visit to New Delhi.The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has often reiterated that Russia remains a time-tested partner and a cornerstone of India’s foreign policy.

On the sidelines of the ongoing 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also held discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The meeting covered bilateral relations, the Ukraine conflict, and developments in the Middle East.

Following the meeting, Jaishankar wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Good conversation with FM Sergey Lavrov of Russia on the sidelines of #UNGA80. Useful discussion on bilateral ties, the Ukraine conflict and developments in the Middle East.”The Russian Embassy in India confirmed the talks, highlighting the importance both nations place on maintaining regular engagement at the highest levels.

India’s growing economic influence, combined with Russia’s pivot toward Asia in response to global geopolitical shifts, has added new momentum to their bilateral ties. The two sides continue to explore greater cooperation in energy, defence, technology, and trade.
