- IMF projects India's 2026 GDP growth at 7 per cent.
- Strong domestic demand and services drive India's economy
- RBI also raised India's FY27 GDP forecast to 7.1%.
In a major update, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in the year 2026, has projected India's to at least 7 per cent amid strong domestic demand, and services continue to contribute to the country's economy. Earlier, the international body projected the growth to be 6.4 per cent. The IMF made these predictions as India struggles to sustain amid heavy oil prices and geopolitical tensions.
The IMF in its October World Economic Outlook (WEO) has projected India's growth to 7 per cent from an earlier estimate of 6.7 per cent.
The IMF (International Monetary Fund) projects India's GDP growth at 7.0% for 2026 and 2027. IMF also says, "The global economy remains resilient, but that resilience is becoming more fragile and more uneven. Growth is projected at 3.1% in 2026 and 3.4% in 2027, while inflation is expected to reach 4.7%, driven largely by higher energy and food prices."

The upgraded projection follows stronger-than-expected economic performance in the first quarter of FY27, when India’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew 7.8 per cent year-on-year. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also increased its GDP growth forecast for FY27 to 7.1 per cent from 6.7 per cent previously.
The Indian subcontinent managed to secure a place among major economies at a time when the nations are struggling with sky-high oil prices, global tensions, and uncertainties.
Why did IMF Increased India's GDP Forecast?
IMF claimed that the improved outlook happened after strong domestic demand and robust services activity, assisting India sustain economic expansion despite higher energy costs and disruptions in the global economy. Beneficial demographic trends, a flourishing domestic market, and persisting structural reforms are also expected to support India’s medium-term growth potential.
The latest revision mirrors the stronger-than-anticipated performance of the Indian economy and follows upward adjustments to growth projections by other institutions. As per IMF’s forecasts, India’s economy broadened 7.8 per cent in FY26. Growth is expected to moderate to 7 per cent in FY27 before remaining at the same level in FY28.

World Economy To Grow 3.1 In 2026: IMF
The IMF claimed global economic growth will slow down in 2026 to 3.1, which was recorded as 3.5 per cent in 2025. The world economy will go upwards to 3.7 per cent in 2027, the IMF said.
IMF said, “The global economy remains resilient, but that resilience is becoming more fragile and more uneven. Growth is projected at 3.1 per cent in 2026 and 3.4 per cent in 2027, while inflation is expected to reach 4.7 per cent, driven largely by higher energy and food prices."
