A horrifying incident aboard a Brooklyn subway train on Sunday morning, December 22, has shocked New Yorkers and ignited widespread outrage. A woman was set on fire at the Stillwell Avenue station, but what has stunned the public, even more, is the shocking footage that shows a group of onlookers, including police officers, watching or walking past without offering any help as the flames engulfed her body.
Authorities allege that Sebastian Zapeta, a Guatemalan citizen who entered the US illegally, calmly approached a woman aboard a stationary F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn on Sunday morning and set her clothing on fire.
Sebastian Zapeta, 33, has been charged with first- and second-degree murder and arson for allegedly setting a woman on fire while she was sleeping on the F train in Coney Island, Brooklyn, on Sunday. Authorities say Zapeta fanned the flames with a shirt. He was arrested Sunday night, arraigned on Tuesday in Brooklyn Criminal Court, and remanded into custody without bail. His attorney did not comment after the arraignment.
Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, during interrogation, claimed he was intoxicated and couldn't recall setting a woman on fire aboard a New York City subway train. Police say he set the woman, whose identity remains unknown, on fire and then calmly watched her burn while sitting on a bench on the platform.
Sebastin Zapeta, 33 is the ANIMAL from Guatemala who was once deported that set fire and murdered an innocent woman on the NYC subway. He’s the filth sitting on the bench watching her burn! From NY to Chicago to Philly round their asses up and send them out of here! I’m done. pic.twitter.com/RV3zYsgNAa

Shocking Details Unveiled
According to the criminal complaint, Sebastian Zapeta allegedly set a woman's clothes on fire and fanned the flames with a shirt, causing the fire to fully engulf her. Authorities have body camera footage, surveillance video from the subway car, and witness statements about the incident.
Shocking video footage shows several bystanders, including a New York Police Department officer, watching as the woman’s clothes were engulfed in flames. Another officer walked past the scene, seemingly unsure of how to respond. Zapeta-Calil is seen fanning the flames with his shirt before being arrested hours later. The woman tragically died at the scene.
"The depravity of this horrific crime is beyond comprehension, and my office is committed to bringing the perpetrator to justice. This gruesome and senseless act of violence against a vulnerable woman will be met with the most serious consequences," Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said in a statement.
