With speculation that former President Donald Trump's foreign policy toward China would be tougher in his second term if he wins, a senior member of the Chinese national advisory body suggested on Thursday that China would prefer Kamala Harris over Trump as the next US president. This preference stems from the fact that bilateral ties deteriorated sharply during Trump's presidency, leading to significant confrontations.
Opinions among the Chinese general public are mixed regarding Harris and Trump. However, Jia Qingguo, a member of the Standing Committee of the national advisory body CPPCC expressed a preference for Harris, citing a negative experience with Trump and stating, “We don't want to go through that again, “I would prefer Harris because of the bad experience with Trump. We don't want to have that experience again,” in a rare statement that revealed Beijing's favoured candidate in the US presidential election.
In his first term, the former president claimed that the US experienced an unprecedented economy that no other nation had matched. He asserted that they were outperforming China significantly, a fact acknowledged by the Chinese.
Trump expressed confidence in achieving even greater success in the future and stated that he would resolve the illegal immigration crisis by sealing the border and completing the wall, most of which he claimed to have already constructed.
While adopting a tough stance on China by reinforcing US policies to challenge Beijing’s claims in the contested South China Sea and Taiwan, as well as curbing China’s ambitious plans to export electric vehicles, Biden has also maintained regular communication with President Xi Jinping to effectively manage tensions.
