Five people of a family in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district died of suffocation from the smoke of burning coal on Monday night. The deceased included children, aged between nine and 13 years, who were cousins sleeping in a room with a vessel of coals to keep warm on the cold winter night. 

The victims were identified as Sonam, Zaid, Mahir, Mehak and Kashish. Three of them, Sonam, Zaid and Mahir were siblings and children of a truck driver, named Raisuddin. Police said the cause of the death of the five children was suspected to be of suffocation, which was caused by the burning of coal in a closed house where proper ventilation was not present.  

The family was unaware of the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning from the coals, which can cause headache, nausea, vomiting and also may result in death. Police stated that the children had vomited before losing consciousness, as evident from one of the child’s clothes. They were taken to the Community Health Center, Hasanpur, where they were pronounced dead.

The incident which took the lives of five children shocked the entire area, as it was the first case of such a tragedy due to coal smoke. Raisuddin, who had a dream of providing higher education to his children, was devastated by the loss of his entire family. The villagers and the authorities expressed their condolences and urged people to be careful of using coals for heating.

In another incident, two people died of suffocation while sleeping after lighting a fire in a room due to intense cold weather in Uttar Pradesh’s Hisar cantonment on Saturday. The incident took place when both were sleeping and the smoke spread in the room following which the duo was suffocated to death. 

The deceased were identified as Tarvez Mohammad (31) and Shiv Dhani (29) were residents of Uttar Pradesh and worked in crane operations at the Satrod railway station in Hisar.
