A 30-year-old woman with three children converted to Hinduism and married a Class 12 student in a temple ceremony in Uttar Pradesh's Amroha district on Wednesday, police said. The woman, now known as Shivani, was earlier identified as Shabnam. She married the teenager after divorcing her husband a week ago.
According to Hasanpur Circle Officer Deep Kumar Pant, the woman’s parents have died and she has been married twice before. Her first marriage ended in divorce and her second husband, Taufiq of Saidanwali village, was left disabled in a 2011 road accident.
Police said Shivani recently developed a relationship with an 18-year-old student. She divorced Taufiq last Friday before converting to Hinduism and formalising the marriage with the teenager.
Uttar Pradesh enforces the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021, which prohibits conversions through force, fraud or deceit. Authorities are reviewing the circumstances of the conversion and marriage, but no complaints have been filed so far.
The boy’s father, Dataram Singh, also a resident of Saidanwali, expressed support for the couple, saying the family stands by their decision and wishes them a peaceful life together.

Meanwhile, in Aligarh’s Manoharpur village, a woman allegedly absconded with her daughter’s fiancé just nine days before the wedding. The man, who left home on the pretext of shopping for wedding clothes, later called his father saying, “I am leaving. Don’t try to find me.” Around the same time, the bride’s mother also disappeared.
An investigation revealed they had eloped together. Police have launched a probe following a missing persons complaint and said cash and jewellery intended for the wedding were also taken. The marriage was scheduled for April 16.
