A study conducted by the Microbiology Department of Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College has revealed that the Dengue-2 and Dengue-3 strains are currently the most active serotypes spreading across Western Uttar Pradesh. Among them, Dengue-2, known to trigger dengue haemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome, is considered the most dangerous and potentially fatal.

This is believed to be the primary reason behind the increasing number of severe dengue cases being reported in districts, including Meerut, health experts say.

The serotyping study was performed for the first time by the college to identify active variants in the region. Around 70 blood samples from dengue patients were tested using PCR, out of which 33 samples confirmed the presence of DENV-2 and DENV-3.

Dr Amit Garg, Head of the Microbiology Department, stated that the findings will be shared with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to contribute to ongoing vaccine development efforts targeting the DENV-2 strain.

Doctors have warned that DENV-2 leads to a rapid drop in platelets, often below 10,000, and can cause:
