Eastern Peripheral Expressway: Commuters in Ghaziabad and Greater Noida may soon find relief from confusing turns and navigation errors, as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to install proper directional signage on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE). The initiative, with an estimated cost of Rs 36 crore, aims to address a long-standing issue broken or missing direction boards—that has left many drivers stranded or lost, especially after storms damaged a large number of signboards.
Stretching from Sonipat to Palwal in Haryana via Ghaziabad and Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh, the EPE plays a key role in decongesting Delhi by redirecting traffic bound for northern states such as Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir. The lack of signage has severely affected the ease of travel on this crucial route.
"The Eastern Peripheral Motorway is maintained by Maple Highways. Earlier, Maple Highways was given a notice. EPE is being repaired. Direction boards will be repaired with Rs 36 crore," said Mridul Mishra, Manager of NHAI (EPE).
According to Jagran.com, vegetation along the expressway has also created visibility and safety issues. Overgrown bushes on the central verge and both sides of the road have begun to extend into the carriageway. In addition to restoring signboards, NHAI plans to trim trees and clear grass that has crept onto the road.
Other pressing issues also plague the EPE. Solar panels installed between Duhai and Dasna in Ghaziabad are reportedly missing. Multiple cracks have emerged on stretches like the route toward SDGI Global University in Greater Noida, which worsen during rainfall due to water seepage.
NHAI has assured that repairs will cover more than just signboards. “Direction boards will be installed on EPE, and trees and plants will be trimmed. Solar panels will be repaired. At many places, the roofs above the toll booths have been damaged. That too will be repaired. At many places, the iron railings on the roadside have been damaged. This railing will also be repaired,” officials confirmed.
