The electricity corporation in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad has been taking strict action against the defaulters who owe the electricity corporation an estimated amount of about Rs 485 crore in total in three zones of the district. In the last 20 days, the electricity corporation disconnected the connections to the homes of about 1,500 defaulters, but collecting revenue from them remains a challenge.

The electricity corporation has about 11 lakh consumers in Ghaziabad, out of which two lakh are defaulters. Most of these defaulters have not paid their bills for years and the interest charged on the outstanding amount is also significant.

The corporation launched a One Time Settlement (OTS) scheme on November 8, 2023, to enable the defaulters to pay their dues in discounted and easy installments. The scheme ran till January 16, 2024, but only about 70,000 people registered in the scheme and paid about Rs 90 crore.

Despite continuous awareness campaigns, the remaining defaulters did not avail the benefits of the scheme, which was also extended once. Since January 17, the corporation has been busy disconnecting their connections.

The corporation officials have also been running door-to-door knocking and calling campaigns for recovery from defaulters, but they are not coming forward to pay their dues. Only small defaulters are paying their bills. This is the reason why the corporation is not getting the expected revenue.

Officials said that they are sending notices to the defaulters, asking them to pay their dues within 15 days or else their connections will be disconnected. They said that they are disconnecting the connections after the stipulated time and restoring them only after the dues are paid.
