Under the central government's Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, the district administration has initiated work towards making every Gram Panchayat self-reliant.

As part of this, preparations are now underway to build shopping malls within the Gram Panchayats. The search for land has already begun, and construction will commence once the land is acquired.

Ghaziabad District: The Plan

Ghaziabad district, which is undergoing rapid urbanisation, currently has a total of 142 Gram Panchayats.

The Goal: A scheme is being prepared so that residents of these Gram Panchayats do not have to travel elsewhere for shopping and can instead shop within malls in their own areas.

Pilot Project: As a model, a shopping mall will first be built in a Gram Panchayat adjacent to the city.

How It Will Work

Allocation: The malls will contain shops, which will be allocated to residents of the Gram Panchayat for operation, based on the council's consent.

Revenue: The rent collected from these shops will be used for development work within the Gram Panchayat.

Impact: This will alleviate financial difficulties in providing basic facilities and promote self-reliance.

District Panchayati Raj Officer, Zahid Hussain, stated that he had undertaken a similar successful initiative in Rampur.

He said, "In Rampur, a shopping mall has been built in a Gram Panchayat. It is currently operational, with 43 shops running inside the mall. The rent from the shops funds development work in the Gram Panchayat."
