The Ayurveda Department of Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath AYUSH University has begun offering pain management through Agnikarma, a traditional cauterisation therapy. Under this procedure, heated metal rods (shalakas) made of gold, silver, iron, copper, and a five-metal alloy (panchlauha) are applied to specific points on the body to relieve pain. The therapy was launched on Wednesday.

Ayurveda practitioner Dr Ramakant Dwivedi, who treated a patient suffering from heel pain (Vaat Kantak), said the method is completely safe, effective, and free from infection risks. Agnikarma has been found beneficial for conditions such as cervical spondylosis (Manya Stambh), lower back pain (Katigraha), and heel pain. Although the technique may sound painful, experts clarified that patients generally do not experience significant discomfort.

According to Ayurvedic principles, joint pain is considered a Vata Pradhan Vyadhi, often accompanied by morning stiffness. Agnikarma, mentioned in Panchakarma therapies, uses heated metal rods to cauterise pain points in circular or dotted patterns. Each metal rod serves a specific purpose: iron for heel pain, gold for delicate body parts, silver for cervical issues, and panchlauha rods for the lower back. The rods are selected based on the required temperature and type of ailment.

Ayurveda practitioner Dr Lakshmi Agnihotri noted that heel pain often results from prolonged use of hard shoes or high heels, creating a needle-like sensation in the foot. Staff Nurse Priya Tripathi was also present during the treatment session.

The university has also introduced a two-year PG Diploma in Ksharakarma, focusing on Ayurvedic treatments for piles, fistula, and fistula-in-ano through the Kshar Sutra technique. The application form is available on the university’s website.

Vice-Chancellor Dr K Ramchandra Reddy said BAMS graduates are eligible to apply. Additionally, applications have opened for a six-month Agnikarma Diploma, which will train students to specialise in the cauterisation therapy.
