The police are gearing up for large-scale action against cattle smuggling operations, with a joint strategy to be formulated following a range-level meeting between Gorakhpur and Bihar police officials. Records of cases registered over the past 10 years are being scrutinised to identify gangs whose names have repeatedly surfaced.

ADG Mutha Ashok Jain stated that the objective is to dismantle the entire network, which has strong roots in Bihar. Kingpins from West Champaran, Gopalganj, and Siwan districts operate through well-organised networks, with several gangs active across Gorakhpur and neighbouring districts.

One key figure is Jawahir Yadav, a resident of Kushinagar district, who runs his gang from Tamkuha under the Dhanaha police station jurisdiction in West Champaran. His network operates in Kushinagar as well as Pipraich, Gulriha, and Shahpur areas of Gorakhpur. Two members of his gang were arrested by Shahpur police during an encounter two months ago. Another active operator is Sahab Ansari, whose gang also runs from Tamkuha and has a strong presence in border areas.

Investigations have revealed about 10 active gangs from Gopalganj, including those led by Mintu Khan and Bhuttu of Narahwa and Gopalpur. These gangs reportedly use over 100 pickup vehicles to abduct and transport cattle illegally. Confiscated animals are often kept in Barharia, Siwan district, before being sold or further distributed.

Police officials emphasised that many of these operations span state borders, making joint action essential. ADG Jain added that the upcoming strategy will focus on intelligence sharing, coordinated raids, and vehicle tracking. Action will also target logistical support, vehicles, and storage points to effectively break the backbone of the cattle smuggling network.
