Gorakhpur Cantt railway station is set for a significant infrastructure upgrade, with plans for a second entrance and a new overbridge being fast-tracked to alleviate traffic congestion and improve accessibility for thousands of passengers. Under the direction of North Eastern Railway's General Manager, Uday Borwankar, the construction process for these projects has been expedited.
The Second Entrance Project
The railway administration has finalised a new map, a detailed proposal, and a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a second station entrance on the south side. The tendering process is expected to begin shortly.
Objective: To provide a direct and unobstructed route to the station, eliminating the need for passengers to cross the railway line and wait at the congested crossing.
Location And Access: The new entrance will utilize 7,790 square metres of army land, creating a direct path from the AIIMS gate via Army Public School.
Benefit: This will prevent passengers from missing their trains due to traffic jams and make the journey to and from the station much smoother.
Addressing A Growing Need
The current primary entrance on the station's north side is plagued by a railway crossing (157A) that handles approximately 200 train movements daily. The frequent closure of this crossing leads to constant traffic congestion, discouraging many from using the station.
The upgrade is critical as Gorakhpur Cantt is being developed into a key satellite terminal at a cost of Rs 20 crore. The station already operates two passenger trains, with a third being prepared. In the future, it will also serve as a hub for local trains on the Narkatiaganj, Chhapra and Varanasi routes.
New Overbridge To Be Constructed
In addition to the second entrance, a railway overbridge will be constructed at the Gorakhpur Cantt crossing (157A) to provide a permanent solution to the traffic bottleneck.
Project Cost: Rs 69 crore
Dimensions: Approximately 674 metres long and 17 metres wide.
Current Status: The railway administration has invited tenders for the construction work.
Benefit: The overbridge will provide seamless travel for both rail passengers and the general public, significantly benefiting residents of over a dozen localities, including Nandanagar, Jharna Tola, Lalganj, Gayatrinagar, Unchwa and Dargahia.
