The Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation is set to take a major step to make the cleaning system for the city's drains and culverts modern, safe, and effective. Moving away from the traditional cleaning system, the Municipal Corporation will now adopt robotic technology.
As part of this, preparations are underway to purchase a special drain and culvert cleaning robot at a cost of approximately Rs 2,00,00,000. The objective of this initiative is not only to make the cleaning work faster and better but also to ensure the safety of sanitation workers.
According to Municipal Corporation officials, this state-of-the-art robot will be capable of effectively removing accumulated silt, plastic, rubbish, and other solid blockages from drains and culverts in a short time. Until now, cleaning culverts had been a major challenge for the Municipal Corporation, as workers had to enter narrow and deep culverts amidst flowing water to clean them. This posed a risk of accidents and loss of life. With the use of the robot, this risk will be eliminated.

The procedure adopted for cleaning the culverts will also be entirely scientific. Before lowering the robot into the culvert, the flow of water into it will be stopped for some time. After this, the expert staff will send the robot inside using a remote control to carry out the cleaning. Once the cleaning is complete, the robot will be taken out, and the water flow will be restored. This will enable thorough cleaning without any human intervention.
As well as purchasing the robot, the Municipal Corporation will sign a five-year contract with the relevant company. This will include responsibility for the machine's operation and maintenance. An expert employee from the company will be permanently stationed to handle the robot's operation and technical supervision.
In addition, Municipal Corporation officials may also soon visit the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Advanced cleaning robots and modern machines are already in use in Mumbai. Based on the experience and technical knowledge from there, a detailed framework for the local use of the robot in Gorakhpur will be prepared.

“The procurement process for the culvert cleaning robot will be initiated soon. Once the machine arrives, it will be tested, and if successful, it will be deployed in the city's main drains and culverts. This will bring a revolutionary improvement to the cleaning system, and improved drainage will provide residents with relief from waterlogging during the monsoon, said Avinash Pratap Singh, Assistant Municipal Commissioner.
