Kanpur Metro is reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability by expanding green infrastructure and adopting innovative energy-saving technologies. As part of its ongoing efforts, a 1,200-square-meter green belt has been developed along a five-kilometer stretch between Baradevi and Naubasta, complementing the greenery already established under the depot and elevated routes.
According to Metro Managing Director Sushil Kumar, 35,000 square meters of greenery has been developed so far across the metro depot and primary corridor. Additionally, like the primary corridor, a rainwater harvesting system has been installed on every second pillar along this new route.
Kanpur Metro, which operates with zero carbon emissions, has introduced a first-of-its-kind energy inverter system in India with its third rail DC system. This special inverter enables the reuse of energy generated from train braking, significantly improving energy efficiency. Currently, the system conserves and reuses 40–45 per cent of the total energy, meaning that for every 1,000 units consumed, 400–450 units are recovered.
This regenerative braking technology is also being used in metro trains and lifts, further enhancing energy conservation efforts. In addition, a 1 MW solar rooftop plant has been installed at the Kanpur Metro depot, underscoring the system’s push toward clean energy.
Through these initiatives, Kanpur Metro continues to emerge as a model of sustainable urban transport in India.
