Kanpur Metro Expansion: The long-awaited expansion of the Kanpur Metro is set to bring significant improvements to the city’s public transport system. Currently operational from IIT Kanpur to Motijheel with nine stations, the metro will extend its route to Kanpur Central Railway Station, adding five underground stations.

According to a Native Planet report, the extension will increase the metro’s network to 14 stations, covering a 15-kilometre stretch, including both elevated and underground sections. The extended line is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 7, marking a major step towards improving Kanpur’s urban infrastructure.

Kanpur Metro: Affordable And Time-Saving Travel

The new route will enable commuters to travel between IIT Kanpur and Kanpur Central Railway Station in just 25 minutes at a fare of Rs 40. This development is expected to offer a faster and more cost-effective alternative for daily travellers, particularly those commuting from Kalyanpur and nearby areas.

Kanpur Metro: NCMC Card Discount

To encourage ridership, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has introduced a 10 per cent fare discount for passengers using the NCMC smart card. Authorities aim to boost metro usage and promote sustainable transport options with this incentive.

Kanpur Metro: Infrastructure And Technology Upgrades

The Kanpur Metro project features advanced technology, including a modern third rail system for power supply. Unlike conventional overhead wires, the third rail operates with a 750-volt DC system, running parallel to the tracks, which reduces maintenance needs and enhances operational efficiency. The third rail installation has been completed along the Motijheel to Kanpur Central stretch.

Additionally, the track-laying work over a 1.5-kilometre section between Nayaganj and Kanpur Central is also complete. The Native Planet report quoted UPMRC Managing Director Sushil Kumar, who confirmed that signalling and telecommunications systems would soon be installed to ensure seamless operations.
