A Muslim woman in Kanpur was ostracised by her family and community after she met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in a saffron ‘dupatta’ over her veil. The woman met CM Adityanath to seek help for a property dispute with her brothers, who allegedly threw her out of the house. The woman also accused that the city cleric also refused to help her claiming that she had converted to Hinduism.
The woman visited the police commissioner’s office with a saffron dupatta covering her headscarf and said that she was harassed and humiliated by many people who told her that she was no longer a Muslim and hence, ineligible for any assistance.
The woman informed the chief minister Yogi Adityanath about her predicament on December 23 after which the police intervened. However, the photograph of the meeting went viral, creating more problems for her.
The woman alleged that her brothers stopped giving her food, took all her belongings, including sweaters and blankets and left her to fend for herself in the winter with just her dupatta. They also transferred everything their father left behind, including the property, cash, and jewellery, into their names.

The city cleric Abdul Quddus Haji, who had initially promised to help her, changed his stance when she visited him. He ordered her to leave the place, hurling abuses at her and shooing her away when she pleaded for help to survive. She also complained to Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind national president Arshad Madani, but he brushed her off, saying that it was a local problem.
The woman submitted a report to the police commissioner’s staff officer Ashok Kumar Singh, who said "the woman and her brothers are already at odds. She has complained about it many times. The police have registered an FIR and taken action. "Meanwhile, the cleric has alleged that the accusations against him are false. "How can I even think of stopping her from going to meet the chief minister," he asked, reported news agency IANS.
