In a significant development aimed at reducing chronic traffic congestion in Kanpur, the state government has granted in-principle approval for the construction of five new railway overbridges (ROBs) in the city. The initiative, backed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is expected to bring long-awaited relief to residents who face daily traffic jams due to limited road infrastructure and frequent railway crossings.
The estimated cost for these five ROBs is pegged at Rs 1,698 crore, and the Public Works Department (PWD) has been directed to prepare and submit the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for all approved projects.
The move follows a recent high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Minister in Lucknow, where traffic bottlenecks in urban areas were discussed in the presence of public representatives and senior officials.
As part of the deliberations, PWD had initially submitted proposals for 13 new overbridges.
After review, the following five were selected for priority execution:
Priority Railway Overbridge Projects and Estimated Costs
-Maryampur–Saket Nagar Elevated Bridge: Rs 799.09 crore
-Panki Padav–Gangaganj ROB: Rs 305.01 crore
-Panki Dham Parallel ROB: Rs 164.45 crore
-Tatmill–Ghantaghar Chauraha ROB: Rs 193.90 crore
-Afeem Kothi–Juhi Khalwa ROB: Rs 225.95 crore
Thousands of vehicles pass through these locations daily, and long delays are often caused due to closed railway gates. The new bridges aim to streamline traffic flow, reduce fuel consumption, and provide faster access to key areas, including industrial hubs like Panki and Dada Nagar.
"We're targeting to send all DPRs to the government by August so that funding can be allocated in the current financial year," said Anoop Kumar Mishra, Executive Engineer, PWD.
Expected Benefits of the New ROBs
-Reduced traffic congestion: Major railway crossings will see improved movement.
-Time savings: Faster commuting for residents.
-Fuel conservation: Less idling will reduce unnecessary fuel consumption.
-Industrial access: Better connectivity to economic zones.

The PWD has also submitted assembly-wise development proposals covering 426 projects with a cumulative estimated cost of Rs 5,005.62 crore. These include key constituencies like Govind Nagar (Rs 1,344.25 crore), Arya Nagar (Rs 834.99 crore), and Bilhaur (Rs 720.47 crore).
The five ROBs now await final DPR submission and subsequent budgetary approval, setting the stage for a potential overhaul of Kanpur's outdated traffic infrastructure.
