Continuous rainfall from Sunday night till Monday morning brought much-needed relief from the scorching heat and humidity, but plunged Kanpur into chaos, with widespread waterlogging forcing residents to stay indoors and halting essential services.

By morning, residents across multiple localities found their streets submerged under one to two feet of water. The flooding not only restricted movement but also disrupted basic amenities like drinking water and electricity. With power outages in several areas, people were forced to wade through waterlogged lanes to access hand pumps for drinking water.

The situation worsened as the municipal garbage collection system collapsed. Due to the heavy rain, municipal corporation vehicles did not operate in many neighbourhoods, and regular sweeping could not be carried out. Soaked garbage lay rotting in the streets, releasing foul odours and making it difficult for residents to even breathe comfortably.

Waterlogging was reported in major areas such as Jarib Chowki, Gandhinagar, Khalasi Line, Rambagh, Kaushalpuri, Saket Nagar, Gujaini, Dabauli, Rawatpur, Swaroop Nagar, Jawahar Nagar, Ramadevi, Krishnanagar, Gandhigram, Yashodanagar, Kidwai Nagar, Jarauli, Khyaura, Shyamnagar, Rampuram, Kalyanpur, Panki, and Shivli Road.

Many neighbourhoods, including Juhi Bamburahia, 40 Dukan (Kidwai Nagar), Parampurva, Babupurva, Govindnagar, Chawla Market, Nand Lal Square, and Motijheel were also severely affected, with residents unable to leave their homes.

Commercial hubs such as PPN Market, Cycle Market, Gwaltoli, and Vishwa Bank Barra were submerged under nearly a foot of water, impacting local businesses.

Industrial zones in Fazalganj, Dadanagar, and Panki also bore the brunt of the downpour, with several factories flooded. Operations were halted, and goods sustained heavy damage, causing significant financial losses.

Meanwhile, with roads submerged and access disrupted, schools across the city declared a rainy day, giving students an unplanned day off.

Despite the relief from heat, the torrential rain has once again exposed the city’s fragile drainage infrastructure and poor preparedness for monsoon conditions.
