The Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation is working to relieve severe traffic jams for people travelling between Lucknow, Agra, and Delhi by rapidly advancing the construction of an underpass at Lucknow's Awadh Crossing. The project is expected to bring significant relief to hundreds of thousands of people.
The approximately 900-metre-long underpass will connect VIP Road to Para Road and help reduce traffic congestion. This construction will not only provide relief to a local population of 500,000 but also allow people travelling from the capital to Kannauj, Agra, Mathura, Noida and Delhi to avoid being stuck in traffic at the crossing. The underpass has been a long-standing demand for those using the Agra Expressway.
Vehicles coming from VIP Road will directly exit onto the road leading to Para via the Awadh underpass. It is estimated that the traffic load will be reduced by 40 per cent. Only traffic from Charbagh heading towards Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport, Unnao and Kanpur, in addition to local commuters, will use the road above the underpass.
Project Details And Timeline
A two-lane, double-girder box underpass is being constructed, and more than 50 per cent of the work is already complete. The structure will include a central divider to prevent traffic jams.
Key specifications:
Total Length: 887.36 metres
Entry Ramp: 282.16 metres
Box Section: 350 metres
Exit Ramp: 255.20 metres
Box pushing technology has been used for a 100-metre section during construction. The underpass will be able to handle more than 15,000 vehicles in 24 hours.
The Bridge Corporation is spending Rs 14,637.20 lakh on the entire project. According to engineers, efforts are being made to complete the work by December 2026, though the official completion date for the civil works is documented as June 2027. Once built, it is expected to provide relief for the next 25 to 30 years.
Features And Security
The underpass at Awadh Crossing will have a complete lighting system. Arrangements are also being made as part of the civil works to prevent water logging during the monsoon, a common issue on underpass ramps.
For security, CCTV cameras will be installed in the underpass and connected to the police control room, similar to the existing surveillance on the Agra Expressway.
Current Traffic Congestion
Due to the ongoing construction, traffic congestion has currently increased in the area. The Bridge Corporation has barricaded half of the road coming from the Para side for the underpass work and is also storing construction materials on a portion of it.

While there should be at least six guards deployed, fewer are present on site, causing greater inconvenience to the public. Commuters passing through Awadh Crossing face severe traffic jams, especially between 9 am and 10 am and from 5:30 pm to 7 pm.
