A couple in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested for attempting to claim Rs 25 lakh in insurance by producing a fake death certificate to declare the husband dead. Police said Ravi Shankar and his wife, Kesh Kumari, submitted fraudulent documents to the insurance company. During the investigation, both confessed to the crime at the police station. They will be presented in court, according to officials.
According to NDTV, Lucknow police reported that complainant Sandeep Wadkur filed a written statement regarding an insurance policy issued to Ravi Shankar by Aviva India in December 2012 for Rs 25 lakh. On April 21, 2023, Kesh Kumari submitted a death claim, stating that her husband had died on April 9. Based on the documents she provided, the insurance company approved the claim and transferred the Rs 25 lakh to Shankar’s account.

In a separate incident, Couple arrested in Chitrakoot district in Uttar Pradesh on July 9 2025, for allegedly staging a murder to claim a Rs 2 crore life insurance payout, Sunil Singh (39) and his wife Hema Singh (35), both from Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, were taken into custody by police after a tip-off led to their apprehension near Anandpur Ragouli village on July 7.
The case came to light when a charred Alto K10 was found on June 30 near Sikri Aman village under Rajapur police station, with an unrecognizable body inside. Initially thought to be Sunil, the body sparked an FIR under BNS sections 103(1) and 238, and DNA tests were ordered.
During interrogation, Sunil admitted the body was actually Vinay Chauhan, a solitary man he befriended, drugged, and burned alive inside his car to fake his own death and collect insurance money. Hema Singh helped mislead family and police by identifying the corpse as her husband.
Sunil confessed that financial troubles and YouTube crime shows inspired the plan, which involved luring Vinay with food and liquor, then setting him ablaze with camphor, body spray, and a small gas cylinder. The victim was later confirmed dead by his brother Vikas Chauhan in Nehru Nagar, Rewa.
