The archaeological site of Hulas Kheda in Mohanlalganj is set to receive a permanent identity, with the State Archaeological Directorate preparing to establish a site museum that will preserve and display the rare historical artefacts unearthed from the region. The initiative aims to promote regional cultural tourism and connect the public with the region’s rich heritage.
State Archaeological Director Renu Dwivedi said that the continuous discovery of relics from different eras at Hulas Kheda makes the site a “living book” for researchers, historians, and cultural enthusiasts. Once completed, the museum will be among the few in North India where thousands of years of cultural evolution can be witnessed in one place.

The museum will house a remarkable collection of artefacts, including:
-Terracotta statues and figures from the Kushan period, including depictions of Vishnu-Mukh, Kartikeya, Ganesha, Durga, and Shiva-Parvati—showcasing extraordinary craftsmanship
-Clay lamps, chariot wheels, architectural fragments, jewellery, and other objects dating back 1,700 to 1,400 years
-A gold-inscribed plate with a rare image of Lord Vishnu
-The remains of an ancient Rajpath (royal road), highlighting structured drainage, flooring, and residential layouts
-Photographic displays of the excavation process, offering visual documentation of key discoveries
Excavations at Hulas Kheda began in the 1970s, revealing four cultural layers. The oldest is believed to be nearly 3,000 years old. Key findings include:
-Textured baked brick structures, indicating sophisticated urban planning and construction methods
-Coins from the Kushan period, reflecting the era’s political and economic influence
-Agricultural tools, pottery, and murals, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of ancient inhabitants
The proposed museum is not only a preservation project but also a step toward boosting academic and tourism interest in the area. It will provide on-site research opportunities for scholars and help the local community engage with its historical roots.
With this move, Hulas Kheda is poised to emerge as a significant cultural and archaeological landmark in Uttar Pradesh.
