The proposed East–West Corridor of Lucknow Metro’s Phase-1B, stretching from Charbagh to Vasant Kunj, is projected to significantly reduce congestion in some of the city’s most traffic-clogged areas. Covering Latouch Road, Aminabad, Chowk, Thakurganj, and Dubagga, the corridor is part of a Rs 5,801 crore project aimed at addressing the haphazard and unplanned traffic conditions in the old city.
While the metro administration has estimated an initial daily ridership of 1.5 lakh passengers when operations begin, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) study projects the number to be much higher—around 4.59 lakh passengers per day. By 2041, the DPR estimates ridership on this corridor will rise to 6 lakh passengers daily.
According to the operational plan, trains will run every three minutes between Charbagh and Thakurganj, and every six minutes between Thakurganj and Vasant Kunj. By 2041, the frequency will be reduced to 2.5 minutes and 5 minutes, respectively. Seventeen train rakes will be required in 2030, increasing to 20 by 2041.
UPMRC’s study predicts Chowk will be the busiest station, handling nearly 90,000 passengers daily in 2030 and over 1.04 lakh by 2041. In contrast, Vasant Kunj station is expected to have the lowest ridership, with about 7,140 daily passengers in 2030 and 9,270 in 2041. Other high-traffic stations will include Aminabad, Charbagh, and Balaganj.
