In a groundbreaking procedure at the Apex Trauma Center of Sanjay Gandhi PGI, the ligament of a brain-dead patient was successfully transplanted into another patient, enabling them to walk without pain. This marks the first such surgery in North India. The transplanted ligament was sourced from the Novo Tissue Bank and Research Center in Mumbai, where ligaments are preserved and can be used for up to one and a half years.

The complex surgery was performed by Professor Palak Sharma of the Apex Trauma Center. According to Professor Sharma, the key advantage of this procedure is that the patient’s own ligaments do not need to be removed for the transplant, which reduces surgery time and minimises pain. The patient, Ashish Kumar from Mohanlalganj, had suffered multiple ligament injuries in a severe accident. His femur and tibia were fractured, and his knee bone was dislocated.

Initially, surgeries were conducted on the femur and tibia. However, due to the damage to four ligaments in the knee, instead of removing the patient’s own ligaments, the team opted to transplant ligaments from a brain-dead donor. The surgery was successful, and Ashish is now recovering rapidly.

The team involved in the transplant included Dr Prasad Bhagunde, Director of the Tissue Bank in Mumbai, along with Dr Liaquat, Dr Abhishek, Nursing Officer Sachin, and Nursing Officer Lata Sachan.
