The emergency ward at the Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow will soon undergo an expansion, adding 30 more beds to its current capacity of 75, plus 30 in the triage block.

This expansion is aimed at improving access to critical care, reducing patient wait times, and lessening the need for referrals to other hospitals like KGMU and SGPGI. The hospital's director, Prof CM Singh, stated that the emergency ward receives 300-350 critical patients daily, often exceeding its current capacity.

The new unit will be built in a previously vacant hospital block, formerly used by an NGO for food distribution. The proposal for the expansion has been finalised and will be sent to the government for approval. The project is estimated to cost around Rs one crore and will include five additional ventilator beds.

Prof Singh also mentioned that the Center for Transplant, currently under construction at the institute, is nearing completion and is expected to be operational within six months. This center will be the first of its kind in the state, offering bone marrow, liver, and kidney transplants under one roof, adhering to international standards.
