A father-son duo from Delhi sacrificed two goats at an ancient temple in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura on Monday, scattering blood on the temple premises. The incident occurred in Chamad Devi temple, also known as Poonth Wali Maiya, in a village near Surir town, triggering anger among the locals.
The accused family fled after the protest of devotees who had come for worship. Police have registered an FIR against the accused following a complaint by local resident, Lakshmi Dutt Sharma, who asked police to arrest the individuals for temple desecration.
While animal sacrifices were once a tradition at the ancient temple, the practice has now ceased. The Delhi-based family, originally from Surir Kalan, visited the temple with superstitious beliefs and conducted the sacrifice after performing puja.
As news of the sacrifice spread, villagers, including village sarpanch and others, demanded action against those responsible for practising animal sacrifice at the temple premises.
