Four major intersections in MeerutTejgarhi, Commissioner's Residence Intersection, Hapur Adda, and Bachcha Parkare set to be widened and expanded to ease traffic congestion.

A key feature of the upgrade will be the creation of a "free left-turn" lane at each intersection, allowing vehicles to turn left at a continuous speed without having to stop at a red light. To achieve this, all poles (including electricity poles) and other equipment within 100 meters of the intersections will be removed, and all related cables will be laid underground. The entire intersection road will be reconstructed.

The project also includes specific provisions for e-rickshaws and pedestrians:

E-Rickshaw Lanes: A separate, 10-foot wide lane will be created for e-rickshaws to facilitate easy movement and passenger pickup or drop-off.

  • E-rickshaws will only be permitted to stop 100 meters away from these intersections.
  • They must remain in their designated lane. Other vehicles (cars, motorbikes) will not be allowed into the e-rickshaw lane, and e-rickshaws will not be allowed into general traffic lanes.

Footpaths: The footpaths at the four intersections will be cleared of encroachments and renovated.

  • Railings will be installed on both sides of all footpaths to prevent vehicles from accessing them and to stop shops from being set up.
  • The footpaths will be continuously monitored.

The Meerut Development Authority (MDA) recently opened the technical bids for the project, which is estimated to cost approximately Rs 15 crore. The financial bids are scheduled to be opened on Thursday, after which a company will be selected. Work will commence after the work order is issued.

Re-tender For Hapur Adda

While tenders were invited for all four intersections simultaneously, a re-tender will now be issued separately for the Hapur Adda intersection. This is because companies could not meet the technical bid criteria for the work related to that specific location.
