The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated preparations to ease road connectivity between the capitals of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. A new greenfield highway connecting Kanpur in UP to Bhopal in MP will begin construction in March, starting from Ramaipur village in Kanpur Nagar, passing through Hamirpur and Mahoba, and reaching Kabrai on the Madhya Pradesh border.
In Madhya Pradesh, the highway will link to the economic corridor under construction from Chhatarpur to Bhopal. The 112-118 km four-lane greenfield highway will be access-controlled, with limited entry points, and aims to bypass densely populated areas while developing rural regions along the route.

The project, estimated to cost around Rs 3,700 crore, is expected to reduce road accidents and promote industrial development in the Bundelkhand region. In Uttar Pradesh, the highway will connect Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Hamirpur, and Mahoba, while in Madhya Pradesh, it will extend to Bhopal via Chhatarpur, Sagar, and Vidisha.
Currently, the two-lane highway from Kanpur to Hamirpur faces frequent traffic jams and records the highest number of accidents. The alignment proposal for the greenfield highway has been approved by the ministry and cleared by the National Planning Group. It has now been sent for gazette publication to initiate land acquisition, with objections to be resolved within 21 days.

The Kanpur-Kabrai greenfield highway will be constructed similarly to the Bundelkhand Expressway and is part of the central government’s 2021 plan to build a parallel highway along the Kanpur-Sagar National Highway. Once completed, the highway will significantly improve travel between UP and MP while boosting regional development.
