Safety Measures On Noida-Greater Noida Expressway

The project will involve the installation of signages, solar-powered road markers, new road markings with thermoplastic paint, speed limit signs, rumble strips, exit point markers, and more, they added.

The authority has already released a tender for the project, with interested companies required to submit their applications by May 15. The safety upgrades will commence near Sector-14A and extend across the entire expressway.

“The Noida-Greater Noida Expressway is a key road that connects Delhi with Greater Noida and leads to the Yamuna Expressway and the thousands of commuters use this daily. It will be a key link to the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar. That makes it even more important to improve its safety features quickly,” Vijay Rawal, general manager at the Noida authority, said.

The 24-km-long expressway is divided, with 20 km under the Noida Authority and the remaining 4 km under the Greater Noida Authority. Numerous accidents have occurred on the expressway due to inadequate lighting, missing road signs, and unclear entry and exit points.

The urgency for improved safety measures arose after a tragic accident on August 14, 2024, in which three students lost their lives when their car crashed into a pole and then a crash barrier.

A recent survey conducted by the authority revealed that essential features such as lane markings, reflectors, and direction boards were either missing or damaged. Bollards, short posts used to guide traffic, were not present at several locations along the expressway.

The Noida Authority has previously hired experts from the Regional Centre for Urban and Environment Studies (RCUES) to assess the road. Their investigation revealed that many areas don't have proper lane markings, reflectors and signboards. The absence of kilometer markers also made navigation challenging, particularly for those unfamiliar with the area.

Officials stated that these improvements will enhance both safety and traffic flow. The expressway features 13-foot overbridges and around 19-20 public toilets and urinals, but many of these facilities lack proper signboards.
