Travelling from Noida to Kanpur and Lucknow has become significantly more expensive this Diwali season, with sleeper bus fares increasing four to five times compared to regular days. While tickets usually cost between Rs 700 and Rs 800, fares now range from Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 due to the festive rush for Govardhan Puja and Bhaiyya Dooj.

With trains completely booked, hundreds of thousands of migrant workers and employees are relying on buses, putting a heavy financial burden on them. Despite the high fares, low seat availability is forcing passengers to wait for hours.

Passengers at Greater Noida’s Parichowk bus stand expressed frustration. Ramu, a Kanpur resident and factory worker, said, “On normal days, I could reach Kanpur for Rs 750, but today sleeper buses are charging Rs 4,800.” Vivek, travelling to Lucknow with three children, added that each ticket costs between Rs 4,200 and Rs 4,500. Even ordinary bus fares have surged to Rs 2,000, with severe overcrowding making travel uncomfortable, especially for women and children.

Railways have run special trains, but they remain insufficient to meet the demand. On the Kanpur-Lucknow route alone, more than 200 buses operate daily, yet demand continues to exceed supply. Passenger numbers, usually over 5,000 daily, double during the festive period.

Anil Sharma, ARM of the Greater Noida depot, said, “All 117 buses of our depot are on the road for passenger convenience. We are making every effort to provide better services, and passengers facing any issues can contact the depot directly.”
