UP BJP Prepares For Cabinet Reshuffle, Organisational Revamp; SIR Campaign To Shape Decisions

The Bharatiya Janata Party is preparing for a major organisational expansion in Uttar Pradesh and a possible reshuffle of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s cabinet once the picture becomes clearer after the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign.

Following a meeting of the BJP Core Committee at the Chief Minister’s residence in Lucknow on Tuesday, state party president Pankaj Chaudhary left for New Delhi to brief the central leadership. Party sources said the reshuffle and organisational revamp could take place around Makar Sankranti, during which the new BJP state executive is also expected to be formed.

According to sources, the cabinet reshuffle may follow a formula of exchanging roles between the party organisation and the government. This could involve the induction of new faces into the cabinet, the reshuffling of portfolios among existing ministers, and the movement of some ministers into organisational roles. The proposals were discussed at length during the Core Committee meeting, and implementation is likely soon after approval from the central leadership.

The BJP leadership is said to be working on a strategy to balance caste and regional equations with an eye on the 2027 Assembly election. Party sources indicated that greater representation may be given to leaders from Other Backward Classes (OBCs), Dalits and the youth, while efforts are also being made to address regional balance by inducting leaders from Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, western Uttar Pradesh and the Awadh region.

Following the appointment of Pankaj Chaudhary as state president, speculation has grown that senior leaders active in the organisation could be given key roles in the government. Some ministers currently holding independent charge may be promoted to cabinet rank, while performance reviews, administrative feedback and the outcome of the SIR exercise could influence changes in responsibilities.

The meeting, which lasted around one-and-a-half hours, was attended by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, BJP state president Pankaj Chaudhary, general secretary (organisation) Dharmpal Singh, and RSS kshetra pracharaks Anil (East) and Mahendra Kumar (West). The deliberations are being viewed as significant in the context of the 2027 Assembly polls.

Sources also said that vacant posts in commissions and boards are likely to be filled as part of the broader exercise. There are indications that some leaders from the organisation may be brought into the government, while certain ministers could be assigned organisational responsibilities. There is also speculation that outgoing state president Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary could be inducted into the cabinet.

At present, the Uttar Pradesh government has 54 ministers, including the Chief Minister, against the permissible limit of 60. Two cabinet vacancies arose after the Lok Sabha elections, following the election of former PWD minister Jitin Prasada and Minister of State for Revenue Anoop Pradhan Valmiki as Members of Parliament. Party sources said new faces are likely to be accommodated against these vacancies as part of the impending reshuffle.
