Starting July 1, all government and private schools affiliated with the Uttar Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (UP Board) will be required to mark attendance online for students of Classes 9 to 12, as well as for teachers and non-teaching staff. This move is aimed at increasing transparency and discipline within the education system.

Until now, online attendance was not mandatory, which led to frequent complaints of students remaining absent despite being enrolled. With the new system in place, it will become easier to track absenteeism and identify students who are not attending classes regularly.

An agency has already been appointed to implement the system, and a presentation explaining the process will be held at the UP Board headquarters in Prayagraj on June 23. The online attendance mechanism is expected to eliminate the problem of fake admissions and ‘ghost’ students, enabling the government to access accurate data on school enrollment and attendance. This, in turn, will help in effective policy planning and ensure better allocation of resources.

According to Board Secretary Bhagwati Singh, a detailed action plan will be shared with all schools after testing the system to ensure smooth implementation. The move is also expected to fix accountability among teaching and non-teaching staff and curb irregularities in private institutions.
