Heavy rainfall in Nepal has caused the rapid rise of river levels in the district, with the Saryu and Rohin rivers now flowing above the danger mark. The strong currents have intensified soil erosion at several locations, prompting the Irrigation Department to go on high alert.

As of 4 pm on Friday, the Rapti river at the Birdghat gauge was just 0.04 meters below its danger point, with officials expecting it to cross the mark overnight. The Saryu river was measured at 0.19 meters above the danger level in Ayodhya and 0.39 meters above in Turtipar. Meanwhile, the Rohin river's water level was recorded at 0.80 meters above the danger mark at Trimuhanighat.

Villages Inundated And Crops Destroyed

The rising waters are having a direct impact on residents and agriculture. In the Campierganj administrative division (tehsil), Komar tola, a hamlet in Budheli village, has been completely surrounded by water, and the administration has arranged a boat for villagers. Hundreds of acres of crops have been submerged in the area due to the swelling Rapti and Rohin rivers, with villages like Chakdaha and Bhujouli also reporting significant crop damage.

Erosion Threatens Embankments And Villages

The threat of erosion is a growing concern. Near Uttarasot village in the JangalKauria block, the Rapti river is now just 70 feet away from a major embankment. Villagers fear that a breach could submerge more than 25 villages. In response, the Irrigation Department has deployed 200 laborers for anti-erosion work.

Similarly, near Bahbolia village, the river is flowing dangerously close to the Rigauli-Belsar embankment, causing fear among residents as protective boulder fortifications have subsided. Erosion has also intensified near Ramkola and Chakdaha villages.

Administration On High Alert

Officials are monitoring the rivers 24/7 and conducting drone surveys of the affected sites. Following a news report in the Dainik Jagran newspaper, the Irrigation Department surveyed the erosion in Gyankol and has begun preparing a report for a flood prevention project.

Senior officials, including the Commissioner and District Magistrate, have inspected the threatened areas. SDM Campierganj Siddharth Pathak confirmed that 11 flood relief centers, 11 flood outposts, four flood shelters, and two helipads have been established in the tehsil to prepare for any emergency. While the Ami river is also reportedly rising in the Bansgaon and Sahjanwa areas, officials have stated that there has been no loss of life or property so far.
