In a major push towards road safety and a transparent licensing system, the Uttar Pradesh government has approved the opening of modern driving training and testing centres in 24 districts across the state.
The Institute of Driving Training and Research Centre (IDTR), spread over 10-15 acres, will be established in Lucknow, Ballia, Gorakhpur, Agra, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Jhansi, Kanpur Nagar, Shahjahanpur and Prayagraj.

Equipped with an automated driving test track, simulators for light and heavy vehicles, classrooms, workshops, a hostel and medical testing facilities, these IDTRs are set to become training-of-trainers academies and road safety research centres.
Along with this, the Regional Driver Training Centre (RDTC), comparatively smaller with covering about three acres of land, will also be established in Varanasi, Bareilly, Meerut, Moradabad, Aligarh, Mathura, Azamgarh, Ayodhya, Banda, Mirzapur, Etawah, Saharanpur, Sitapur, Jaunpur and Bijnor.
These will offer training for new drivers, refresher courses for existing drivers (bus, truck, school vehicles), along with special modules designed for drivers transporting hazardous goods, and automated testing facilities. Currently, the state only has one IDTR in Raebareli, while there are no RDTCs.
