The Public Works Department (PWD) of Uttar Pradesh concluded the inspection of 721 bridges that are over 50 years old, finding 75 in a dilapidated condition. These unsafe bridges will be demolished and new ones will be constructed in their place. A detailed report will be submitted to the government next week.

This inspection was ordered by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath following the frequent collapse of bridges in Bihar. The PWD conducted an initial inspection two weeks ago and reported to the government.

In the initial investigation, 83 out of the 721 bridges were identified as dilapidated. Consequently, the government ordered a re-inspection to determine which bridges could be repaired and which are required to be reconstructed from the beginning.

The re-inspection, carried out by the Chief Engineer and senior officers of the department, revealed the following regional breakdown of dilapidated bridges: 10 in Kanpur, six in Saharanpur, four in Unnao and three each in Mainpuri, Amethi, Ghazipur, Sonbhadra and Sitapur. Additionally, two dilapidated bridges were found in each of the following regions: Lucknow, Jalaun, Hardoi, Prayagraj, Azamgarh and Kheri.

In some areas, such as Didarganj in Azamgarh, Kanchi Bridge in Sitapur, Ganga Bridge in Kanpur and Etawah, new bridges have already been constructed. Therefore, while the dilapidated bridges in these locations will be demolished, no new bridges will be built in their place.
