The UP government has established astronomy labs in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) across the state. All 746 KGBVs will provide students with insights into the mysteries of space and foster their interest in astronomy. The labs will offer engaging information about planets, satellites, lunar and solar eclipses, and the solar system.
A total budget of Rs 29.84 crore has been released for this purpose. The Project Approval Board of the Union Ministry of Education, under Samagra Shiksha, has approved the budget. According to the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Basic Education, Sandeep Singh, the emphasis is on inspiring girls to pursue careers in space science.
This initiative is being taken in view of the success of India's Chandrayaan-3 mission and the active participation of 54 women scientists in it. The aim is to cultivate girls' interest in space science from the school level and motivate them to become scientists, fostering a scientific outlook.
The labs will facilitate the creation of working models related to space science by the students. It's worth noting that these schools provide free residential education to girls from underprivileged families in backward blocks.
