A man from Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district who was arrested in Pakistan last month was presented before court on Friday. During the hearing, his lawyer facilitated a brief video call with his parents, where the man, identified as Badal Babu, reassured them of his well-being and shared emotional remarks.
In the two-minute and 20-second video call, the man expressed regret over his actions, stating, "I never had any wrong intentions nor came here for any wrongful purpose. Circumstances compelled me." He also revealed his conversion to Islam, adding, "My heart guided me to do so. I miss you all; don't cry or I will feel sad."
Badal was arrested on December 27, 2024, in Mandi Bahauddin, Pakistan, after failing to produce valid travel documents. Reports suggest he travelled to meet a 21-year-old woman, Sana Rani, whom he befriended on Facebook over two years ago. However, the woman informed the Pakistani police she had no interest in marrying him.

Badal’s father, Kripal Singh, sought help from district officials and the Ministry of External Affairs, who referred the case to a Karachi-based lawyer. Through online communication, the lawyer arranged for Badal's court appearance and the video call with his family.
The lawyer also visited the woman’s residence to discuss the situation. Meanwhile, Kripal Singh clarified the family had no objection to Badal’s religious conversion but emphasised their desire for his safe return.
