The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued show cause notices to 119 registered but unrecognised political parties in Uttar Pradesh for not contesting any election over the past six years, from 2019 to 2024. These parties now face possible deregistration if they fail to justify their inactivity.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Navdeep Rinwa has directed the concerned parties to submit their replies by July 14. The replies must be submitted by the party president or general secretary, along with a representation, affidavit, and all necessary documents, at the office of the Chief Electoral Officer. The matter will be taken up for hearing on July 21.

Rinwa stated that if a party fails to respond within the given timeline, it will be presumed that the party has nothing to state in its defence. In such cases, a recommendation for delisting the party from the register of political parties will be forwarded to the Election Commission of India.
The notices were dispatched via registered post to the last known addresses of the 119 parties across 40 districts in the state. Lucknow tops the list with the highest number of inactive parties (29), followed by Varanasi with 18 and Ghaziabad with 7.
