Gram Panchayats will no longer be limited to traditional development work like renovating drains, roads, and primary schools—they are set to become self-reliant sources of income in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh. Starting in July, Panchayats will begin manufacturing sanitary napkins and pads in villages, providing employment opportunities for 100 to 150 people per village.

With 1,148 Gram Panchayats in the district, funds from state and central finance are typically used for infrastructure projects. However, reports of irregularities in these developments have prompted a shift toward more sustainable initiatives. Under the new plan, machines will be installed using allocated funds to produce sanitary napkins, ensuring hygiene accessibility while generating income for the community.

This initiative will not only promote cleanliness and convenience for women but also empower unemployed men and women by providing work within their villages. Over time, Panchayats will prosper through self-generated revenue while contributing to local development.

District Panchayat Raj Officer Shrikant Darve emphasised that this project will significantly boost village incomes and provide local employment, with efforts underway to implement the scheme soon.
