As part of preparations for the upcoming three-tier Panchayat elections, the Panchayati Raj Directorate in Uttar Pradesh has completed the partial reorganisation of Gram Panchayats and submitted its report to the state government. The reorganisation has resulted in the abolition of 512 Gram Panchayats and the creation of 11 new ones, bringing the total number of Gram Panchayats in the state to 57,694—down from 58,195 in 2021.
The changes were made primarily due to the formation and boundary expansion of urban local bodies, which absorbed several rural panchayats. Panchayati Raj Director Amit Kumar Singh has sent the reorganisation details to the Principal Secretary of the Panchayati Raj Department.
As part of the next phase, all District Magistrates have been instructed to submit population data for the restructured Gram Panchayats based on the 2011 Census by June 20. This population data will be used to determine the number and boundaries of wards within each Gram Panchayat. Subsequently, voter lists will be prepared, and reservations for various categories will be finalised.
Among the affected districts, 64 Gram Panchayats were abolished in Deoria, 49 in Azamgarh, 46 in Pratapgarh, 26 in Mau, 23 in Kushinagar, 22 each in Ayodhya, Gonda, and Gorakhpur, 21 in Amroha, 19 each in Fatehpur and Ghaziabad, and several others in Hardoi, Aligarh, Farrukhabad, Sant Kabir Nagar, and Sitapur.
Officials emphasised that this restructuring is a necessary administrative step to ensure fair and effective electoral representation, following urban expansion and demographic changes across the state.
