UP Power Consumers Face Issues Despite Rs 44,000 Crore Spent Under RDSS, Council Questions Study Plan

The UP Electricity Consumer Council has raised concerns over the performance of electricity distribution in Uttar Pradesh, stating that approximately Rs 44,000 crore spent under the central government’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) has failed to improve the system.

Highlighting the ongoing problems faced by consumers, the council pointed out that the Power Corporation is now planning to study the systems of private electricity distribution companies, a step that raises questions about why such a study was not conducted before the scheme’s implementation.

Council President Avdhesh Kumar Varma criticised the move, saying that officials from Paschimanchal and Madhyanchal electricity distribution companies are being sent to study private firms operating in Agra and Mumbai, even after a massive public expenditure. He added that if the Power Corporation has faith in private models, its officials should work with them for several years before claiming success.

Varma stressed that the vertical system, despite being praised officially, has not resolved consumer issues, and grievances remain largely unaddressed. The council expressed willingness to provide practical solutions, but emphasised the need for accountability at all levels, from employees to senior officials.
