Amid ongoing resistance from electricity personnel over the installation of smart meters, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation has announced a new policy linking smart meter installation with departmental housing allotment. Going forward, only those personnel who provide written consent for the installation of smart meters will be eligible for government-allotted housing.

Dr Ashish Kumar Goyal, Chairman of the Power Corporation and associated bodies, appealed to all electricity department employees on Monday to cooperate and get smart meters installed at their residences. He emphasised that the meters are being installed strictly for energy accounting purposes and that existing electricity bill exemptions for departmental staff will remain unchanged.

Dr Goyal added that smart meters are being rapidly installed at the homes of nearly 80,000 departmental employees and pensioners across the state. In Gautam Buddha Nagar district, the installation process has already been completed for all such beneficiaries.

Reinforcing the policy, the Chairman stated that the allotment of departmental housing will now be strictly conditional upon consent for smart meter installation.
