The Uttar Pradesh government has sanctioned a Rs 2,000-crore budget for the redevelopment of primary and upper primary schools in the 2025-26 fiscal year. This marks the largest one-time investment ever made in the state's basic education department, the government said in a press release on Thursday.
The funds, allocated under the ‘Major Construction Works’ head, will be utilised to enhance infrastructure, including the development of smart classrooms, computer labs, drinking water facilities, toilets, mid-day meal (MDM) sheds, ramps, and boundary walls.

“Our goal is to enrich the school system structurally, technically and intellectually. Through innovation, transparency, and dedication, we aim to make Uttar Pradesh a leader in education and ensure quality learning reaches every child,” basic education minister Sandeep Singh said, according to the HT report.
The statement highlighted that schools with lower student strength often underutilise resources, whereas those with higher enrolments make more effective use of limited infrastructure. To address this imbalance, schools with 500 or more students will be upgraded and designated as ‘Model Schools’ in the 2025-26 academic session.
Upgraded Features
These upgraded schools will feature smart classrooms, dedicated library rooms, multipurpose halls, club rooms, computer and ICT labs, ‘Learning by Doing’ zones, and enhanced mid-day meal (MDM) sheds.
According to the guidelines, duplication of work will be strictly avoided. Director General (School Education), Kanchan Verma, said that this strategic move aims to increase student enrolment, foster peer learning, encourage active participation, and strengthen experiential learning in schools across the state.
