The construction work of the bridge connecting Gorakhpur to Barhalganj is near completion, with over 90 per cent of the work on one lane finished. The 65.62-kilometre project, which began on April 10, 2017, with an approved cost of Rs 1,030 crore is expected to be open for general traffic by the end of this month.
The construction of the bridge over Saryu river alongside the Barhalganj bypass is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, partially at the Patna intersection where daily traffic jams lasted up to three hours recently. The bridge is expected to facilitate smoother travel to Mau and Varanasi, reducing travel time to just four years.
Meanwhile, the remaining construction work on a lane of the bridge is slated for completion within the next 20 to 25 days, allowing traffic to commence by April 30. The second lane’s construction is underway, with an estimated six to eight months until completion.
Once operational, the Barhalganj bypass will offer an alternative route, easing the journey for commuters to Barhalganj and Dohrighat.
During a recent review meeting, NHAI officials assured Commissioner Anil Dhingra that the remaining construction will be finalised before April 30, enabling the opening of the Saryu bridge’s lane for public use.
