Dehradun Municipal Corporation is taking a significant step under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India mission by fully digitising its building and service tax collection process. Going forward, taxpayers will receive online bills via WhatsApp, along with a payment link and QR code for easy and immediate payment.

During a meeting of the tax section on Wednesday, Mayor Saurabh Thapliyal and Municipal Commissioner Namami Bansal emphasised that major defaulters will be contacted directly and encouraged to pay on time, while legal action will be taken against those who fail to comply despite repeated reminders. The corporation has also secured a verified Meta WhatsApp number for sending bills, ensuring authenticity with a blue tick.

The Municipal Commissioner instructed all tax officers and staff to closely monitor new construction work. Newly built properties will be added to the municipal records immediately, and tax assessments will begin without delay to boost revenue.

Dehradun has over 3 lakh buildings, and since the launch of online billing in February 2025, digital bills have been sent to 30 per cent of taxpayers. The corporation aims to extend this facility to 100 per cent of taxpayers, simplifying payments through UPI apps, cards, and net banking.

In the first quarter of the 2025-26 financial year, the corporation has already collected 25 per cent of its target, marking a 43 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, credited to digital billing and proactive tax collection efforts.
