The Public Works Department (PWD) has constructed a Bailey bridge in record time at the site of the damaged bridge near Shiv Mandir on the Dehradun-Mussoorie highway, restoring traffic movement for small vehicles.
According to officials, heavy rainfall between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning damaged the bridge near Shiv Mandir, along with portions of the highway beyond Paniwala Bend. To ensure uninterrupted traffic, the Bailey bridge was transported from the PWD depot in Rishikesh, and installation began late Tuesday evening. By late Wednesday night, the bridge was completed and opened for use.
District Magistrate Savin Bansal inspected the construction work on Wednesday evening, directing officials to expedite the process since the Mussoorie route is a lifeline for traffic. Acting on the instructions, PWD officials completed the task on a war footing.
PWD Provincial Division Executive Engineer Rajesh Kumar confirmed the completion of the temporary bridge, adding that work on a new permanent bridge will begin beneath the Bailey bridge once the action plan is finalised.
The swift completion has come as a major relief to residents and stranded tourists, who had been facing significant inconvenience due to the disruption on the main route.
