The Uttarakhand government has set up an online marriage registration system under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), but officials responsible for processing applications have shown little interest in monitoring the portal, resulting in prolonged delays in registrations.
On Tuesday, Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue) and Nodal Officer KK Mishra reviewed the online registration portal and warned all concerned officials that their salaries could be withheld if pending cases were not addressed promptly.
The UCC, implemented on January 26, makes the registration of all marriages solemnised after March 27, 2010, mandatory. Marriages before this date are exempt, but authorities must be informed if already registered.
The law also mandates that the Sub-Registrar decide on applications within 15 days; in case of rejection, applicants may appeal to the Registrar General’s court.

During his review, KK Mishra found that many cases were being sent directly to appeal because lower-level officials were not opening the portal to process applications. Officials have now been strictly warned to review all pending applications to avoid salary deductions and ensure timely registration.
