Transport and police personnel in Uttarakhand will soon no longer need to visit police stations and outposts to store seized vehicles, as the Transport Department has begun identifying separate land parcels near Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) and Assistant RTOs to create dedicated parking yards.

The move aims to ease the growing burden on police stations, which are struggling with space constraints as thousands of vehicles are fined or seized across the state every day. Both the police and transport departments together issue penalties to 4,000-5,000 vehicles daily, including cases involving incomplete documents and road accidents. Many seized vehicles remain unclaimed due to ongoing court cases or owner negligence, often rusting for months before eventually being auctioned.

With overflowing premises, several police stations have been unable to accommodate newly seized vehicles, forcing personnel at times to release vehicles after imposing fines rather than impounding them.

To address this, the Transport Department has started locating government land near transport offices to set up dedicated vehicle yards. In the first phase, land has already been identified near office premises in Rishikesh, Pauri, and Haridwar. The next phase will extend the process to other districts.
